Brief biography

Michael (3) Harrison was born around early 1857 to parents Michael (2) Harrison and his first wife Mary (nee Dibley) [Birth Index: Basingstoke 2c 161, 1857 (March)] and was christened at Mapledurwell on March 22nd 1857 [IGI: Batch I017228].

He was with his parents in the 1861 Census.

The 1871 Census appears to find him - but his forename misentered as Matthew - aged "14" living in the household of a carter William Barton in Up Nately, Hampshire where he was likewise occupied as a carter.

The 1881 Census finds him aged "23" boarding in the household of a railway porter William Drinkstone at 6, Cresswell Street in Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire and occupied as a porter. Also present were his brothers William (1) and George (1) together with William Drinkstone's brother-in-law Frank Goodwin, a porter aged "18" and born in Betchton, Cheshire.

In 1884 he married Mary Ellen Goodwin [Marriage Index: Chorlton 8c 937, 1884 (Sept)], who was probably related to the above-mentioned Frank Goodwin.

The 1891 Census finds him aged "33" living with Mary Ellen and four children at 10, Chapel Street East in Ardwick, Lancashire and occupied as a railway porter. Mary Ellen is described as aged "27" and born in Winsford, Cheshire.

Mary Ellen appears to have died aged "36" in 1899 [Death Index: Chorlton 8c 551, 1899 (Dec)].

The 1901 Census finds him widowed and aged "42" living with three children at 5, Chapel Street East in Ardwick and occupied as a foreman railway porter.

It is not yet known when or where he died.

  7. and possibly others ...

The above daughter Emily Ada appears to have been born before her mother married Michael (3), and no birth registration has yet been found for her. She was christened when aged about 8 at Ardwick on April 8th 1891, the baptism register naming her parents as "Michael and Mary Ellen" [IGI: Batch I019664]. In the 1891 Census taken three days previously she was entered as "Amelia A.", perhaps by enumeration error. In the 1901 Census she was entered as simply "Ada". She appears to have died as "Emily Ada" aged "25" in 1908 [Death Index: Blackburn 8e 191, 1908 (Sept)].

The above son Michael was not with his father in the 1901 Census but no prior death reference has yet been found for him, neither has he yet been located in that census.

The above son George appears to have died aged "7" in 1894 [Death Index: Chorlton 8c 405, 1894 (Sept)].

The above daughter Sarah was christened when aged about 2 at Ardwick on November 5th 1890, the baptism register naming her parents as "Michael and Mary" [IGI: Batch I019664]. She was still with her father in the 1901 Census.

The above daughter Maggie was christened at Ardwick on August 12th 1891, the baptism register naming her parents as "Michael and Mary Ellen" [IGI: Batch I019664]. She appears to have died aged "0" in 1891 [Death Index: Chorlton 8c 536, 1891 (Dec)]. The GRO index names her as "Maggie", rather than Margaret, in both her birth and death entries.

The above son William was still with his father in the 1901 Census.
