Brief biography

William (1) Harrison was born in 1853 to parents Michael (2) Harrison and his first wife Mary (nee Dibley) [Birth Index: Basingstoke 7 137, 1853 (Dec)] and was christened at Mapledurwell on November 6th 1853 [IGI: Batch I017228].

He was with his parents in the 1861 Census.

The 1871 Census finds him aged "17" living in the household of a farmer Daniel Lunn in Tunworth, Hampshire where he was occupied as a farm servant.

In 1880 he married Selina Gibson [Marriage Index: Blackburn 8e 571, 1880 (Dec)]. She was born at Darwen, Lancashire in 1852 to parents William Gibson and his wife Mary [Birth Index: Blackburn 8e 291, 1852 (Dec)].

The 1881 Census finds him aged "27" visiting the household of a railway porter William Drinkstone at 6, Cresswell Street in Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire and occupied as a carter. Also present, as boarders, were his brothers Michael (3) and George (1). Meanwhile, his wife Selina - aged "28" - was lodging (but perhaps just visiting) at her parents' home and shop at 35, Hanover Street in Over Darwen, Lancashire where her father William was occupied as a paper maker, grocer and beer seller. Selina's occupation was given as cotton weaver.

The 1891 Census finds him aged "37" living with Selina but no children at 17, Pitt Street in Manchester and occupied as a carter. His brother George (1) was meanwhile living at 13, Pitt Street and likewise occupied as a carter.

The 1901 Census finds him aged "47" living with Selina and one child William aged "9" at 14, Pitt Street in Manchester and occupied as a railway carter.

It is not yet known when or where he died. He may have been the William Harrison who was buried aged "69" on October 26th 1922 at the Phillips Park Cemetery in Manchester [Burial No. 127095].
