Brief biography

Ann (1) Hogger was born to parents Peter (1) Hogger and his first wife Theresa (nee) Underwood. She was christened on May 9th 1830 at Brent Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds her at age "11" living with her parents in Brent Eleigh.

The 1851 Census finds her at age "19" unmarried and living as a house servant in the Street, Stoke by Nayland in the household of the incumbent vicar Charles Martin Torlesse. Also present was her cousin Ellen (1), likewise an unmarried house servant.

The 1861 Census finds her at age "30" still unmarried and living at the Rectory in Wattisham Road, Bildeston in the household of the incumbent Rector Joseph Gedge, where she was occupied as a house maid. Her birthplace is given as Brent Eleigh.

The 1871 Census finds her at age "40" still unmarried and living in the household of an Admiral's wife Harriet E. Cockburn at 3, Broadwater Villas in Frant, East Sussex where she was occupied as a domestic nurse. Also present was her niece Theresa (3) Hogger aged "13" and occupied as a nursemaid.

The 1881 Census finds her at age "50" still unmarried and visiting her cousin Anna (1) at 8, King's Terrace, Portsea in Hampshire where she was again occupied as a domestic nurse. Portsea - today's Portsmouth - is about 10 miles south of Catherington where Ann (1)'s brother Peter (5) was living at this time.

The 1891 Census finds her still unmarried and living with her brother John (3) at Thorpe Morieux.

She died aged "65" in late 1895 [Death Index: Cosford 4a 439, 1895 (Dec)] and was buried at Brent Eleigh on January 2nd 1896 [PR: Cosford DB].
