Brief biography

Anna (1) Hogger was born to parents John (1) Hogger and his wife Elizabeth (nee) Partridge, and was christened on October 21st 1827 at Brent Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds her at age "13" living with her father at Barrow Hill, Acton.

The 1851 Census finds her at age "23" living with her widowed father at Barrow Hill where she was occupied as a housekeeper. Her birthplace is given here as Brent Eleigh.

The 1861 Census finds Anna (1) at age "30" in the household of her cousin Robert (1) at 18, Church Walk in St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds. No occupation is given for her. Her birthplace is given as Acton, where she had lived during childhood.

The 1871 Census finds Anna (1) at age "41" living at Rectory Cottage in Thorpe Morieux, where she was occupied as a cook to William Thomas Harrison, the Rector of Thorpe Morieux. Her birthplace is again given as Acton. Also in the household was a housemaid Elizabeth Dunt, the future wife of Anna (1)'s cousin John (3).

The 1881 Census finds Anna (1) at age "50" living at 8, King's Terrace, Portsea (today's Portsmouth) in Hampshire, occupied as a lodging house keeper. She was unmarried and the head of household. Among her several visitors was her unmarried cousin Ann (1), also aged "50" and occupied as a nurse. Their birthplace is entered in the schedule as "Bentley", presumed to have been a misrendering of Brent Eleigh.

The 1891 Census appears to find her employed as a housekeeper by an Army Major (Norfolk Regiment) Edward B. James living at 83, Beccles Road in Gorleston, Norfolk. The record gives her age very inaccurately as "52" and her birthplace as Acton.

The 1901 Census finds her at age "69" living in the household of a widow Harriett E. Cockburn in Hitcham Street, Bildeston where she was occupied as a domestic servant. Her birthplace is given as Brent Eleigh.

She probably died aged "88" in 1916 [Death Index: Portsmouth 2b 579, 1916 (Dec)].
