Brief biography

Bartholomew (2) Hogger was born to parents William (2) Hogger and his first wife Mary (nee) Turner. He was christened on January 23rd 1790 at Lavenham [PR: Cosford DB].

He married a woman named Ann whose maiden surname is not yet known. She was born at Wortham around 1800.

The 1841 Census finds him at (rounded) age "40" living with Ann and five children in Grundisburgh where he was occupied as an agricultural labourer.

The 1851 Census finds him at age "54" living with Ann and four children in Grundisburgh where he was occupied as an agricultural labourer.

The 1861 Census finds him at age "68" living with Ann and his son Bartholomew (4) in Grundisburgh where he was occupied as an agricultural labourer.

The 1871 Census finds him at age "83" and widowed, living at Grundisburgh and occupied as an agricultural labourer. Bartholomew (4) was still with him, unmarried and occupied as a groom and gardener.

He died aged "83" in 1873 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 383, 1873 (Sept)].

Ann (4) was probably born in Norton. No christening record has yet been found for her. The 1841 Census finds her at (rounded) age "15" living in the household of a clergyman George Taylor in Clopton (near Woodbridge) where she was occupied as a servant. She married John (1) Copping [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 12 1035, 1845 (Dec)] at Grundisburgh on November 19th 1845 [IGI: Batch M013401]. He was born at Clopton around 1821-22. The 1851 Census finds her living with him and their infant son John (2) Copping in Ipswich Road, Grundisburgh where John (1) was occupied as an agricultural labourer. The 1861 Census finds them with John (2) and a further son Samuel living in Grundisburgh. Around 1862 they produced a daughter Ursula. The 1871 Census finds Ann (4) and Ursula as visitors in the household of her brother Thomas (8) at Grundisburgh Hall. John (1) was meanwhile living elsewhere in Grundisburgh with their two sons. The 1881 Census finds the family living in Grundisburgh. John (1) Copping died aged "59" in 1890 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 450, 1890 (Sept)]. The 1891 Census finds Ann (4) at age "68 and widowed, living in the household of a farm labourer Joseph Bennett - whom Ursula had by now married - in The Street, Grundisburgh. The 1901 Census finds her at age "82" still living in Grundisburgh with Ursula's family. She died aged "83" in 1902 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 648, 1902 (March)].

Mary (7) was christened at Norton on July 25th 1824 [IGI: Batch C132361]. She married William Halls [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 12 1035, 1845 (Dec)] at Grundisburgh on October 23rd 1845 [IGI: Batch M013401]. He was born in Grundisburgh around 1822-23. The 1851 Census finds them living, with no children, in Parker's Row off the Ipswich Road, Grundisburgh where William was occupied as an agricultural labourer. The 1861 Census finds them living with a son William aged "9" in Grundisburgh. Lodging with them was a widower James Hall aged "86" and born in Mendelsham who was probably William (senior)'s father. The 1871 Census finds them living with their son William in Grundisburgh. The 1881 Census finds them living on their own in Grundisburgh. The 1891 Census finds them living on their own in Malling Lane, Grundisburgh. William died aged "78" in 1900 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 564, 1900 (June)]. The 1901 Census finds Mary (7) aged "76" and widowed living by herself in a cottage in a lane off the main street of Grundisburgh, her birthplace given correctly as Norton. She died aged "81" in 1905 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a ..47(page unclear), 1905 (Dec) - indexed as "Hall"].

Elizabeth (5), Sarah (1) and Jane (3) were christened jointly at Grundisburgh on July 9th 1848 [IGI: Batch C013402]. The 1851 Census finds them living with their parents in Grundisburgh.

Elizabeth (5) married Henry Groom [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 935, 1858 (June)] at Grundisburgh on May 25th 1858 [IGI: Batch M013401]. He was born in Grundisburgh around 1833-34. The 1861 Census finds them living with their infant daughter Elizabeth in Grundisburgh where Henry was occupied as a carpenter and Deputy Parish Clerk. The 1871 Census finds them living with three children in Grundisburgh where Henry was again a carpenter and also the Parish Clerk. The 1881 Census finds them living with two children in Grundisburgh where Henry was still occupied as a carpenter. Elizabeth (5) died aged "52" in 1886 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 576, 1886 (March)]. In 1888 Henry remarried to a much younger woman Mary Ann (nee?) Bilner [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 1593, 1888 (Dec)]. The 1891 Census finds them living in Grundisburgh.

The 1861 Census finds Sarah (1) aged "23" living in the household of Henry M. Barlow, Rector at the Rectory in Burgh (about a mile north-east of Grundisburgh) where she was occupied as a house maid. She appears to have died in 1862 [Death Index: Woodbridge 4a 393, 1862 (June)].

The 1861 Census finds Jane (3) at age "19" living at Bealings House in Great Bealings where she was occupied as a parlour maid. She married William Jackson [Marriage Index: Woodbridge 4a 859, 1869 (June)] at Grundisburgh on June 3rd 1869 [IGI: Batch M013401]. He was born in Hethersett, Norfolk around 1845-46. The 1871 Census finds them living with their first child Emily at 89, Westminster Road in Bermondsey where William was occupied as a tanner labourer. The 1881 Census finds them living with four children at 266, Aldermaston Road in Bermondsey, Surrey where William was occupied as a warehouse labourer. The 1891 Census finds them living with four children at this same address where William was occupied as a general labourer. They were still at this address in 1901.
