Brief biography

Ellen (2) Hogger was born in 1843 to parents William Lemon (1) Hogger and his wife Ann (nee) Warren [Birth Index: Cosford 12 331, 1843 (Dec)]. She was christened six years later on December 8th 1849 at Monks Eleigh with her younger sister Jemima (2) [PR: Cosford DB].

Her future husband was Britton Frost, who was born in 1841 in Assington, Suffolk to parents James Frost and his wife Susannah (nee Stephenson) [Birth Index: Sudbury 12 429, 1841 (Sept) - indexed as "Briton"]. The 1841 Census finds the family living in Assington where James was occupied as an agricultural labourer.

James died around 1850-51. The 1851 Census finds his widow Susannah still living in Assington with her children, now including Britton aged "9" and an unnamed son aged only "7 months". In 1857 she remarried to William Spooner [Marriage Index: Sudbury 4a 481, 1857 (March)].

The 1861 Census finds Britton lodging at Little Mill in Nayland Road, Bures St. Mary, occupied as an agricultural labourer. Meanwhile, Ellen (2) was living at age "17" in a school at 57, Founereau Road in Ipswich St. Margaret where she was occupied as a kitchen maid.

Ellen (2) and Britton married at Monks Eleigh on June 30th 1866 [Marriage Index: Cosford 4a 643, 1866 (June)]. The GRO index spells their names as "Ellen Hoggar" and "Briton Frost".

The 1871 Census finds Ellen (2) aged "27" with Britton - oddly entered as "Henry" - and their daughter Ellen Ann living on the Pantile Estate in Hampton, Surrey, where Britton was occupied as a domestic servant and gardener. William and Susannah Spooner were meanwhile living in Assington, and boarding with them was Ellen (2)'s sister Jemima (2).

The 1881 Census finds her at age "38" with Britton and six of their children living at (or near) the Brick Kiln in Assington where Britton was occupied as an agricultural labourer.

The 1891 Census finds the family living at Old Brick Field in Assington where Britton was still occupied as an agricultural labourer.

The 1901 Census finds them living at Gazley Gate Cottages, No. 39, Assington Street in Assington where Britton was again occupied as an agricultural labourer.

Ellen (2) died aged "71" in 1915 [Death Index: Sudbury 4a 1329, 1915 (March)], and Britton died aged "85" in 1927 [Death Index: Sudbury 4a 1276, 1927 (March)].
