Brief biography

Emily (1) Hogger was born in 1839 to parents James (3) Hogger and his wife Sarah (nee) Snell [Birth Index: Cosford 12 304, 1839 (Dec) - indexed as "Hoggar"]. She was christened on December 25th 1839 at Lavenham [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds her at age "2" living with her parents in Church End, Lavenham.

The 1851 Census finds her at age "11" living with her parents in Church Street, Lavenham.

The 1861 Census finds her at age "21" in the household of a butcher John Green in Prentice Street, Lavenham where she was occupied as a housemaid.

In 1867 she married John Frederick Wells [Marriage Index: Cosford 4a 689, 1867 (Sept)]. They married on July 11th 1867 at Lavenham [PR: Cosford DB]. John's origins are not yet known, but he was born around 1840 at Hadleigh.

The 1871 Census finds her living with her husband - a saddler and stirrup-maker in the High Street at Hadleigh. There were no children with them.

The 1881 Census finds her living with her husband - a saddler and harness-maker - and her sister Lydia Jane (1) still in the High Street at Hadleigh. There were again no children with them.

She appears to have died aged "46" in 1886 [Death Index: Cosford 4a 3, 1886 (June)].

In 1888 John Frederick subsequently remarried to a much younger woman, Henrietta Jane Stutter [Marriage Index: Sudbury 4a 629, 1888 (March)]. She was born in 1859 at Elmsett, Suffolk to parents John Stutter and his wife Harriett [Birth Index: Cosford 4a 420, 1859 (Sept)]. The 1861 Census finds her at age "1" living with them at Red House farm in Elmsett where her father was a farmer of 82 acres. The 1871 Census finds her as "Jane" living in Newton, Suffolk with her uncle Joshua Warren and his wife Abigail [PRO Ref: RG10 Piece 1717 Folio 58 Page 2]. The 1881 Census finds her again living in Newton with her (now widowed) aunt Abigail [PRO Ref: RG11 Piece 1829 Folio 48 Page 8].

The 1891 Census finds John and Henrietta Jane living in the High Street in Hadleigh.
