Brief biography

Maria (1) Hogger was born to parents Joseph (2) Hogger and his wife Elizabeth (nee) Turner. She was christened on August 17th 1816 at Lavenham [PR: Cosford DB].

In 1838 she married a tailor Alfred Willis [Marriage Index: Cosford 12 369, 1838 (March)]. They married on January 10th at Lavenham; Alfred, whose mother was named Betty, was christened on June 17th 1819 at Lavenham [PR: Cosford DB].

Maria (1)'s first two children by Alfred were named Eleanor ("Ellen") and Martha.

The 1841 Census finds Maria (1) at age "25" living with her daughter Martha in Shilling Street, Lavenham. The schedule indicates that Martha was born outside Suffolk (she was in fact born in Middlesex). Also present was Maria (1)'s sister Anne (1). It is not known where Alfred or Eleanor were at this time.

The family evidently abandoned the Willis surname and subsequently used instead the maiden surname Turner of Maria (1)'s mother.

The 1851 Census finds Maria (1) and Alfred together again with several children living at 14, Hope Terrace in Bromley St. Leonard, Middlesex, now using the Turner surname. Alfred was still occupied as a tailor. Eleanor was again absent. Also lodging in the household was another tailor George Turner aged "22" and a Mary Ann Ginn, both born in Lavenham. This George was the son of a brother Samuel Turner of Maria (1)'s mother Elizabeth, and he married Mary Ann Ginn soon after this census [Marriage Index: Poplar 2 356, 1851 (June)]. They never produced any children. Also lodging in the household was another George Turner, a labourer aged "21" born in Bromley, who may or may not have been related.

The 1861 Census finds them with several children living at 8, Paul Street in West Ham, Essex, still using the Turner surname. Alfred was again occupied as a tailor. The houshold now included Eleanor ("Ellen") aged "22", her birthplace correctly entered as Lavenham.

Nothing more is currently known of them.
