Brief biography

Martha (5) Hogger was born to Bartholomew John (1) Hogger and his first partner Sarah (nee) Butcher and was christened on September 3rd 1854 at Raydon in Suffolk [IGI: Batch C063031]. The latter source names her parents "John Hogger and Sarah" - her father called himself "John" through much of his adult life.

In all the following census records she gave her birthplace as Raydon.

The 1861 Census finds her at age "6" living in High Street, Monks Eleigh in the household of her uncle William Lemon (1), the brother of Bartholomew John (1).

The 1871 Census finds her at age "17" living in Hall Street, Melford in the household of a farmer Frederick Branwhite where she was occupied as a cook.

The 1881 Census finds her at age "29" living at Cambrian Lodge in Gloucester Road, East Barnet, Hertfordshire in the household of a fancy goods importer David Morrison where she was again occupied as a cook.

The 1891 Census finds her at age "37" living at 73, The Drive in Hove, Sussex in the household of a clergyman Frederick H. Stammers where she was again occupied as a cook.

The 1901 Census finds her at age "44" still living at 73, The Drive and again occupied as a cook. The property contained only her and two other servants.

The 1911 Census finds her at age "55" living at 12, The Drive in Hove in service to a widow Edith M. Moore and again occupied as a cook.

She died in Sussex aged 77 in 1931 [Death Index: Steyning 2b 400, 1931 (Dec)].
