Brief biography

Robert (1) Hogger was born to parents Bartholomew (3) Hogger and his wife Martha (nee) Lemon. He was christened on April 21st 1824 at Monks Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds him living with his parents in High Street, Monks Eleigh.

The 1851 Census finds him at age "26" and unmarried, lodging at the Police Station, Bird's Buildings in Islington, London. He was occupied as a police constable.

In 1859 he married Mary Bird [Marriage Index: Cosford 4a 579, 1859 (March)]. An unattributed IGI record states that the marriage took place at Monks Eleigh on January 27th but mistakenly gives the year as 1858. Mary was christened on January 27th 1828 at Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk of parents Samuel Bird and his wife Mary [IGI: Batch C063141].

The 1861 Census finds him living with Mary and their first two children at 18, Church Walk in St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds where he was still a police constable. Also present was his cousin Anna (1).

The 1871 Census finds him lodging at the White Hart Hotel, North Brink in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. He was now a police inspector. His wife and the four children listed below were meanwhile living at London Road in Brandon, which straddles the Little Ouse river on the Suffolk/Norfolk county boundary. Mary incorrectly included him in the household even though he was away, presumably on official business.

The 1881 Census finds the family still at London Road in Brandon. Robert (1) was still a police inspector.

The 1891 Census finds them living with just their daughter Ellen (4) at 5, Kimberley in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, where Robert (1) was still a police inspector. It may or may not be coincidence that his cousin John (3) had married in Great Yarmouth in 1885.

Mary died aged "69" in 1895 [Death Index: Yarmouth 4b 4, 1895 (Dec) - indexed as "Hoggar"].

Robert (1) has not yet been found in the 1901 Census, but was almost certainly living in or near Great Yarmouth.

He died aged "77" later in 1901 [Death Index: Yarmouth 4b 7, 1901 (Sept) - indexed as "Hoggar"].

The 1881 Census finds Agnes Mary (1) living with her parents and occupied as a dressmaker. The 1891 Census finds her as a visitor in the household of a Post Office clerk named Fuller Rolfe at the Post Office in the High Street, Brandon. Her occupation is not given. She married in 1892 [Marriage Index: Yarmouth 4b 29, 1892 (March)] to either Charles Fairweather Green or William Benjamin Knights. She has not been found in the 1901 Census.

The 1881 Census finds Arthur (3) living with his parents and occupied as a joiner. The 1891 Census finds him as a lodger in the household of a coachman named George M. Cooper at 48, Vestry Road in Camberwell, London where he was occupied as a builder. In 1895 he married Elizabeth Rolfe [Marriage Index: Ely 3b 1279, 1895 (Dec)]. She was the daughter of Fuller Rolfe - in whose household Agnes Mary (1) had been living in 1891 - and was born in Brandon [Birth Index: Thetford 4b 385, 1864 (Sept)]. The 1901 Census finds them, with no children, living at 14, Devonshire Road in Yarmouth Southern, Norfolk where Arthur (3) was occupied as a carpenter and joiner. He died aged "52" in 1914 [Death Index: Yarmouth 4b 17, 1914 (Dec)].

The 1881 Census finds Ellen (4) living with her parents and attending school. The 1891 Census finds her living with her parents and with no cited occupation. In 1896 she married Thomas Henry Juby [Marriage Index: Yarmouth 4b 43, 1896 (June)]. He was born in Somersham, Suffolk in 1860 [Birth Index: Bosmere 4a 489, 1860 (Dec)]. The 1901 Census finds them living, with no children, at 106, Northgate Street in Great Yarmouth where Thomas Henry was occupied as a builder. Ellen (4) probably died aged "61" in 1928 [Death Index: Wayland 4b 254, 1928 (June)].
