Brief biography

Thomas (1) Hogger was born to parents William (1) Hogger and his wife Mary (nee) Canham. He was christened on March 30th 1759 at Brent Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

He married Mary (nee) Rainham on December 12th 1780 at Glemsford [PR: Cosford DB]. It appears, therefore, that he married on the same day that his brother William (2) Hogger married in Lavenham. Mary was born around 1758.

The strong tradition of occupation as wheelwright in this family tree may have begun with Thomas (1). At least five of his sons - Thomas (2), Bartholomew (3), Joseph (2), John (1) and Peter (1) - were also wheelwrights.

Mary died aged 73 and was buried on April 23rd 1831 at Brent Eleigh [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds Thomas (1) at (rounded) age "80" living at the Alms Houses in Brent Eleigh where he was occupied as a wheelwright. Also present was a Thomas Hogger aged "15", occupied as an agricultural labourer, who was probably his grandson Thomas (4) by his own son Samuel (1).

Thomas (1) died in late 1844 [Death Index: Cosford 12 246, 1844 (Dec)]. He was buried on December 19th at Brent Eleigh with his age recorded as 86 [PR: Cosford DB].
