Brief biography

William (7) Hogger was born to parents William (4) Hogger and his wife Elizabeth (nee) Andrews. He was born at Little Waldingfield on June 20th 1837 and was christened there on August 6th 1837 [PR: Cosford DB].

The 1841 Census finds him at age "4" living with his parents in Slabs Street, Groton.

The 1851 Census finds him at age "13" living with his parents in Groton Street, Groton where he was occupied as a farm labourer.

The 1861 Census possibly finds him at age "24" serving as a butler to a merchant banker Charles Joyce at (implicitly) Bishops Gate House in Englefield Green, Berkshire. This might seem an unlikely occupation for someone who, in 1851, had been just a farm labourer, yet his older brother Henry (3) - who had also been a farm labourer in 1851 - was by 1861 in the service of a surgeon in London's wealthy Wimpole Street. His birthplace is given as "Lewingham" in Suffolk - he may have believed he had been born in Lavenham, as his father had been. Charles Joyce died in 1869, described in the Probate Registry as "formerly of Bishopsgate [sic] House". The property was demolished in the 20thC and a new "Bishopsgate House" built nearby.

William (7) died aged 33 in 1870 at Groton [Death Index: Cosford 4a 324, 1870 (Sept)]. He was buried there on August 7th, the register giving his age as "34" [PR: Cosford DB].
