Brief biography

Samuel (2) Livesey was born in 1875 to parents George (2) Livesey and his second wife Priscilla Fagan [Birth Index: Salford 8d 154, 1875 (Sept)]. His GRO birth reference is probably [Birth Index: Salford 8d 154, 1875 (Sept)].

The 1881 Census finds him at age "5" living in his parents' household at 2, Robinson's Court in Salford.

The 1891 Census finds him at age "16" living at 18, Wood Street in Salford in the household of his step-father William Ashworth, the third husband of Priscilla. He was working as an errand boy.

He has not yet been found in the 1901 Census.

He married on April 9th 1904 at St. Stephen's Church in Salford to Amelia (nee) Groves [Marriage Index: Salford 8d 189, 1904 (June)]. The register describes him as a "percher", that is, a mill worker employed in the finishing process to inspect items such as woollens for imperfections. He was living at 5, Church Street. Amelia was living at 10, St. Stephen Street. His father George (2) is described as a greengrocer and hers, James Peter Groves, as a carter.

The 1911 Census finds him at age "34" living with Amelia and two children, together with some members of her Groves family, at 35, Quay Street, off Chapel Street in Salford. He was occupied as a nightwatchman for a cottage builder. He gave his birthplace is unusual detail as "Wood Street, Chapel Street, Salford".

The National Register for England and Wales 1939 finds him living with Amelia at 31, Wheaters Crescent in Salford. His birthdate is given as July 9th 1875 and hers as November 23rd 1874. He was unemployed. Also present was their daughter-in-law Florence May, occupied as a hat machinist, but it is not known where her husband Walter (4) was at this time.

Samuel (2) appears to have died aged "67" in 1942 [Death Index: Salford 8d 451, 1942 (Sept)] and Amelia aged "75" in 1950 [Death Index: Salford 10f 543, 1950 (Dec)].

The son Walter evidently married as "Walter Vincent Livesey" on January 28th 1928 at St. Philip's Church in Salford to Florence May (nee) Hogan. His occupation was given on the register as "calender man", that is, one involved in finishing and pressing fabrics. He described his father Samuel (2) as a greengrocer. He was living at 18, Bath Street and Florence at 14, Temperance Street. Her father Thomas Hogan was a warehouseman.
