Brief biography

Albert John Woodhurst was born in 1855 to parents James (2) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Ann Bonner. His birth certificate [Birth Index: Stepney 1c 458, 1855 (Sept)] states that he was born at 1, Ann Street on June 27th 1855. His mother was the informant, living at 23, Morpeth Street in Bethnal Green, and his father was occupied as a police constable. It is not known why he was born in (allegedly) Ann Street.

The 1861 Census finds him at age 5 living with his parents at 21, Dock Terrace in West Ham. His birthplace is here entered as Arbour Square which lies three-quarters of a mile due south of Morpeth Street. Perhaps Ann Street (which seems no longer to exist as such) was near Arbour Square.

The 1881 Census finds him at age 25 living with his mother at Flat 14, Brett Road in Hackney, being unmarried and occupied as a telegraph clerk for the Civil Service.

He died on December 2nd 1887. The death certificate [Death Index: Edmonton 3a 181, 1887 (Dec)] describes him as a General Post Office telegraphist aged 32. The cause of death was certified as "Phthisis 16 years", that is, long-standing pulmonary tuberculosis. He died at 57, Tynemouth Road in Tottenham. The informant, residing at the same address and present at the death, was his brother Arthur Alfred (3), who three years later would himself die from the same cause and at the same age of 32.
