Brief biography

Alfred (2) was born in 1862 to parents Alfred (1) Woodhurst and his second partner Mary Ann Edridge. The birth certificate [Birth Index: Shoreditch 1c 208, 1862 (Dec)] states that he was born at his parents' home at 18, Edith Street in Haggerstone East, Shoreditch on September 3rd 1862. The informant was his mother, and his father's occupation was given as bonnet-maker.

He died the following year. The death certificate [Death Index: Bethnal Green 1c 239, 1863 (March)] states that he died aged 7 months on February 26th 1863 at his parents' address which was then 34, Pitt Street in Bethnal Green. His father, described as a bonnet maker master and present at the death, was the informant and made just his mark instead of a signature. The cause of death was certified as "Tabes Mesenterica", a common childhood illness involving tuberculosis of the abdominal lymph glands. Pitt Street no longer exists as such and its former location is currently unknown.
