Brief biography

Alice Blanche Woodhurst was born in Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana on October 17th 1871 to parents Theodore (1) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Virginia (nee) Alexander.

The US 1880 Census finds her aged "9" living with her parents and siblings in Richmond.

City Directories for Richmond in the late 1880s list her as residing with her family at 220, North Ninth Street.

She married Hilbert Herapath Toler at Richmond on October 18th 1893 [FHL: Film No. 001839240]. He had been born in Oxford, Butler Co., Ohio on July 24th 1867.

The US 1900 Census finds them living with their first child at 94, Fort Wayne Avenue in Wayne township, Richmond. Hilbert was occupied as a druggist. His birth year is here given as 1868.

The US 1910 Census finds them living with both their children at 200, South 15th Street in Richmond where Hilbert was occupied as a drug salesman.

They were listed at this same address in a City Directory for 1918, describing Hilbert as selling drugs, stationery, perfumes and cigars, with "Prescriptions Accurately Compounded".

The US 1920 Census finds them at this address with Hilbert described as a druggist with his own store.

The US 1930 Census finds them still at this address and both their children with them, together with Kenneth's 5-year-old daughter Patricia Alice. By this time Kenneth had been widowed. Hilbert's occupation was unchanged.

Hilbert died on October 17th 1931 and was buried at the Earlham Cemetery in Richmond. According to newspaper obituaries his death had followed from a stroke on the preceding evening. Reports also mentioned that his father had been "for many years the leading photographer of Oxford [township]".

Alice died aged "63" on March 19th 1935 at her home in South 15th Street. Her death certificate gives the cause of death as cerebral haemorrhage with several contributory causes including arterio-sclerosis, hypertension and adenoma of the thyroid. She too was buried at the Earlham Cemetery.

Alice is listed as a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Indiana which was founded and organized in 1916. The list showing her membership appeared in a volume printed in 1940 for the Society's 25th Anniversary. Her entry reads: "Mrs. Hilbert Herepath [sic] Toler (Alice Blanche Woodhurst), 200 S. 15th St., Richmond, Ind." This is the primary source confirming her and Hilbert's second forenames.

Her children by Hilbert Herapath Toler

  1. Kenneth Woodhurst Toler - born in 1894
  2. George Hilbert Toler - born in 1908

Kenneth, who became a pharmacist, married Lurana (nee) Shute on May 7th 1924 and by her produced one child Patricia Alice Toler, born later that year in November. Lurana died just a few years afterwards, on March 16th 1928.
