Brief biography

Andrew (4) Woodhurst was born to parents Andrew (3) Woodus and his wife Susannah. He was christened on December 16th 1781 with his surname spelled as Woodus [Fairlight Parish Register].

He married at Westfield, Sussex on June 11th 1807 to Ann (nee) Crump, who was born at Westfield in 1788 to parents Simon Crump and his wife Elisabeth [descendant's report].

His first child may have been James (4) who was christened at Fairlight in 1809, although the parish register names this child's mother as "Mary".

He appears to have witnessed the marriage in 1808 of his brother Thomas (1) to Mercy Swadling. The other witness was named as "Mary Woodhurst" whose connection is unknown.

In 1813, when his son Andrew (5) was born, he was occupied as a labourer.

In 1837, when his daughter Ann (3) married, he was occupied as a carrier.

His wife Ann died at Ore on June 7th 1839 [Death Index: Hastings VII 270, 1839 (June)].

The 1841 Census finds him living in Guestling Road, Ore with just three of his children - Andrew (5), Harriet (2) and Alfred (4). The census record spells the family name as Woodhurst. Andrew (4) was still occupied as a carrier.

In 1842, when Harriet (2) married, he was still occupied as a carrier.

The 1851 Census appears to find him lodging at 21, Lennox Street in St. Clement Hastings. The census record spells his surname as Woodhouse and describes him as a pauper agricultural labourer aged 69 and born in Fairlight.

He may have died as "Andrew Woodhouse" in 1859 [Death Index: W. Ashford 2a 348, 1859 (Sept)].

Nothing more is currently known of him.
