Brief biography

Bertha Bess Woodhurst was born in Michigan on August 26th 1902 to parents Albert Henry (1) Woodhurst and his wife Hattie Abigail (nee) Brown.

Like her parents and sister, she has not been found in the US 1910 Census.

The US 1920 Census finds her living in the dormitories of Henry Kendall College, East 7th Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she was a student, her age given as "19" but actually 18.

A report "Local Happenings" in the Michigan newspaper The Cass City Chronicle, issue of Friday June 8th 1927, notes that "Miss Bertha Woodhurst of Croswell was the guest of Miss Louise Watrous over the week-end." It is not known who Miss Watrous was.

She has not been found in the US 1930 Census.

She married in Jackson, Michigan on August 22nd 1931 to Clifford Buell Wightman. The marriage certificate describes him as a librarian aged "22", born in Chicago and now residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Bertha is described as a teacher aged "29" and residing in Jackson.

The US 1940 Census finds Bertha, Clifford and their two children living in Alexander Road, Grand Rapids, Kent Co. in Michigan. Clifford was occupied as a librarian for a public library.

Clifford died on February 12th 1993 at Tuscon, Pima Co. in Arizona and was buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Isabella Co., Michigan.

Bertha died on October 31st 1997 at Tuscon and was likewise buried at the Riverside Cemetery.
