Brief biography

Charles Russel Woodhurst was born - according to unattributed IGI records - in Richmond, Wayne Co. in Indiana in the early 1870s to parents Theodore (1) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Virginia (nee) Alexander. His middle name Russell was his grandmother's maiden name. Most sources gives his birth year as 1872 but some give it as 1873 or 1874; all agree upon the date July 25th.

The US 1880 Census finds him aged "7" living with his parents in Richmond.

He married in Preble Co., Ohio to Mary V. (nee) Frazier on December 14th 1897.

The US 1900 Census finds him aged "26" living with Mary at 221, South 12th Street in Richmond, occupied as a roof slater. He is described as born in July 1873 in Indiana, and she as born in October 1878 in Ohio.

The US 1910 Census finds him aged "35" living with Mary at 314, North 8th Street in Richmond, described as a shop owner.

The US 1920 Census finds him aged "44" living with Mary at the same address, occupied as a sheet metal worker in his own shop. His parents' birthplaces are wrongly given here as Indiana. They had produced no children.

Mary divorced Charles in April 1921 citing the usual grounds of cruelty and inhumane treatment. Costs were charged to him but she waived all claim to property and alimony.

He has not been found in the US 1930 Census.

On January 1st 1935 he married to a spinster Grace Delores (nee) Stubbs of North 10th Street, Richmond. She had born on January 23rd 1893 in Preble Co., Ohio to parents Alden Stubbs (born about 1845) and his wife Mary S. (nee) Conarroe (born March 30th 1848 in Butler Co., Ohio). A newspaper report of the wedding states that immediately after the wedding Charles and Grace left Richmond to take up residence at a new home in Germantown, Ohio. He was still working in the sheet metal business.

The US 1940 Census finds him at the much under-stated age of "42" as "Charles Wood Hurst" living with a wife at 209, North 9th Street in Richmond operating his own business as a tinner. His wife is oddly entered as "Alice" aged "40" with birthplace "Indiana". Alongside their entry a census officer has written a circled comment of several mostly illegible words of which the first is clearly "misinformation". The significance of this anomaly is unknown.

Charles died at the above address in North 9th Street on October 28th 1943. His death certificate gives his date of birth as July 25th 1872 and the cause of death as coronary occlusion. Grace was the informant. He was buried at the Earlham Cemetery in Richmond.

Richmond City Directories in the mid-1950s list Grace as residing at 214, North 13th Street.

The American Social Security Death Index records that Grace was born on January 28th 1893 and died in September 1981. Her death certificate states that she died on September 2nd at the Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond where she had been residing at 305, North 9th Street. The cause of death was cerebral vascular accident. She was buried at the Earlham Cemetery on September 4th.
