Brief biography

Edith Woodhurst was born in 1879 to parents Richard William (3) Woodhurst and his first wife Mary Ann Ames. The GRO reference is [Birth Index: Hackney 1b 518, 1879 (March)].

The 1881 Census finds her at age 2 living with her parents at 16, Blanchard Road in Hackney.

She married Thomas (2) Gray in 1899. The marriage certificate [Marriage Index: Hackney 1b 980, 1899 (June)] states that they married at St. Luke's Church in Hackney Parish on May 21st 1899. Thomas (2) is described as a bachelor aged 22 occupied as a coalman and residing at 56, Chatham Place, and Edith as a spinster aged 20 residing at the same address - which was actually the home of her parents. His father Thomas (1) Gray was a coalman and hers was a carman. The witnesses were J. Woodhurst - presumably Edith's step-mother Jane - and R. Woodhurst, who may have been either her father or her sister Ruth (1).

The 1901 Census finds her at age "23" living with her husband and first child at 30, Stockman (or Stockmar) Road in Homerton, Hackney. The precise location of this road, which no longer exists as such, is unknown, but the schedule implies it was very near to Morning Lane. Thomas (2) Gray - born in Shadwell around 1876 - was occupied as a builder's carman.

A relative reports that Edith and Thomas (2) lived at Theydon Road in Upper Clapton, possibly at No. 10, and produced the children listed below.
