Brief biography

Emmeline (1) Woodhurst was born at Murston near Sittingbourne in 1879 [Birth Index: Milton 2a 827, 1879 (Sept)] to parents Daniel Woodhurst and Priscilla (nee) Hales. Descendants state that she was born on July 5th.

In 1884 she emigrated with her mother and siblings to America, sailing from Liverpool on the RMS City of Montreal and arriving at Michigan on July 26th 1884.

She married at Jackson, Michigan on May 20th 1900 to Joseph Percy McKnight, known familiarly as "Percy"; he was born in Nebraska and believed his birthdate to be January 13th 1877. The register of Marriage Returns gives his mother's maiden name as Briggs and Emmeline's mother's maiden name as "Aile", presumably her rendering of "Hales". He was aged "23" and working in a lumber yard.

The US 1900 Census finds them living in Jen Eyck Street, Jackson City in the household of his widowed mother Adelia ("Delia") and occupied as a rail road labourer.

The US 1910 Census finds them living in Summit township, Jackson Co. with their first three children. Percy was now a farmer.

The US 1920 Census finds them living in Sandstone township, Jackson Co. with five children. Percy was still working as a farmer.

The US 1930 Census finds them living in Columbia township, Jackson Co. with five children. Percy was again working as a farmer.

The US 1940 Census finds them still living in Columbia township and Percy continuing as a farmer. Also with them were their married daughter Genevieve and the latter's husband Ross Hall, an unskilled labourer working in building construction (she later divorced him, in 1948).

Emmeline (1) died in Columbia township on May 18th 1943. Her death certificate states that she was aged "63 years and 10 months" and had died from uraemia poisoning over 4 days engendered by pyonephrosis (from which she had suffered for 8 years) attended by anemia. Pyonephrosis is a serious form of suppurative kidney infection. The informant was her husband Percy. She was buried at the Woodland Cemetery in Jackson City.

Percy evidently died on May 19th 1955 and was also buried at the Woodland Cemetery.
