Brief biography

Frederick George Woodhurst was born at Edmonton in 1881 to parents William (7) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Ann Newcomb. His GRO birth reference is [Birth Index: Edmonton 3a 315, 1881 (March)].

The 1881 Census finds him living, aged "2 months", with his parents at 3, Osman Road in Edmonton, Middlesex.

The 1891 Census finds him still living at 3, Osman Road, aged "10".

The 1901 Census finds him still living at 3, Osman Road, aged "20" and occupied as a plasterer.

He married Maud(e) Julia (nee) Dover at the Edmonton Register Office in 1910 [Marriage Index: Edmonton 3a 991, 1910 (Dec)]. Her origins are unknown; there appears to be no GRO reference to her birth and she has not been found in either the 1891 Census or the 1901 Census.

The 1911 Census finds them living at 9, Bounces Road in Lower Edmonton; he was occupied as a general labourer and she working for a furrier as a fur finisher. Her birthplace is entered as Dalston.

During the Great War Frederick George enlisted in Tottenham for a Short Service on July 1st 1915, joining the 230th (Fortress) Company of the Royal Engineers with Service Number 105082. He gave his age as 35 and 5 months, his occupation as plasterer and his address as St. Martin's Road in Edmonton. He bore a tattoo on his left forearm. He embarked to France with the Expeditionary Force on January 21st 1916.

In 1936 they were still living at 21, St. Martin's Road [Electoral Registers].

Frederick George died on February 22nd 1937 [Death Index: Edmonton 3a 1175, 1937 (March)]. His Probate Register entry states that he died at the North Middlesex Hospital. Administration was granted to his widow on April 12th, his effects valued at £146.

The National Register for England and Wales finds Maude widowed and still living at 21, St. Martin's Road, being occupied as a trouser finisher in sports wear. Her date of birth is given as November 18th 1883, possibly not accurately. At the same address was her son-in-law Walter Tom D. Chick, the husband of her daughter Alice Maude; he was wrongly entered as single (having been married since 1934) and was occupied as a bricklayer. Alice Maude was elsewhere.

Maude died aged "81" in early 1961 [Death Index: Edmonton 5e 393, 1961 (March)].
