Introductory Notes

Among the responsibilities of the Overseers of Frindsbury Parish was the provision of Poor Relief, financed in part through funds levied from the local parishioners. Relief payments might be made directly to the intended recipients, or via the Overseers of other parishes in which Frindsbury-derived people were residing. The transcription below shows assessments and disbursements in respect of a William Woodhurst - almost certainly William (9) Woodhurst - during the period 1794-1800, extracted from Frindsbury's Poor Rate Books for 1791-1800 and 1776-1791 [Medway Archives: Original Documents P150/11A/3 and P150/11A/2]. Some entries are included here relating to other persons and properties that may connect with this William. Text within square brackets is transcriber's commentary.

The transcription was kindly undertaken in November 2001 by Mr. Raymond Godfrey of Faversham Historical Research Services.
