He spent his early years living at 23, Cookson Road in Thornton - near Cleveley's - and attended Church Road Primary School. By the time he was aged 10 his parents had decided to make a new life in Australia, and on February 8th 1966 he sailed there with them on the Holland America ship S.S. Ryndam. Upon arriving in Australia he spent the first 5 weeks living at Gumnut Road in West Pennant Hills, New South Wales. Here he attended West Pennant Hills Primary School. With his parents and brother Paul (1) he then moved to 24, Heffron Road in Seven Hills, NSW, and attended Lalor Park Primary School. At the end of 1966 he finished primary schooling and entered Seven Hills High School. He spent the rest of his schooling there and, on reaching the age of 18 and having passed his Higher School Certificate, he then entered employment.

After a year working as a spray painter he decided to change direction and joined the firm Norton Adhesives and Abrasives at Lidcombe, NSW, where he learnt a good trade and rose to the position of Sub-Foreman. It was there that he met his future wife Lynn Robins, the second daughter of Norman Robins and his wife Marie. Lynn was born on September 19th 1957 [NSW GRO Birth Ref: 45770, 1957]. She and Gary (1) married at Sydney on November 20th 1976 and moved straightaway into a new home at 67, Narcissus Avenue in Blacktown (now Quakers Hill), where they still reside. Their three children were all born there.
