Brief biography

Harry (3) Woodhurst was born at Ore in 1865 to parents John William (1) Woodhurst and his wife Agnes Elizabeth. The GRO reference is [Birth Index: Hastings 2b 13, 1865 (Dec)].

The 1871 Census finds him - named "Henry" - at age 5 living with his parents in Middle Road, Ore.

The 1881 Census finds him living with his parents at the Beer Shop in Middle Road, Ore and occupied as a carpenter's apprentice.

In 1888 he married Frances Matilda Patterson [Marriage Index: Hastings 2b 87, 1888 (Dec)].

The 1891 Census finds him living with his wife and child Harry (5) at the Old King John Inn in Ore and occupied as a carpenter.

The 1901 Census finds them at Land View Cottage in Ore. He is described as a carpenter and joiner working on his own account.

The 1911 Census finds them at The Stores in St. Helen's, Hastings. He is described as a carpenter working for a builder.

Frances died around early 1914 [Death Index: Hastings 2b 20, 1914 (March)].

In 1917 Harry (3) remarried to a spinster Deidamia Crampton [Marriage Index: Hastings 2b 91, 1917 (Sept)]. She was born at Brookland in Kent in 1874 to parents Henry D. Crampton and his wife Elizabeth [Birth Index: Romney M. 2a 921, 1874 (Dec)]. The 1881 Census finds her at age "6" living with her parents at 10, Watson's Row in Icklesham, Sussex where her father was occupied as a fish dealer.

Harry (3) died aged 68 in 1934 [Death Index: Hastings 2b 13, 1934 (Sept)] as reported in The Hastings and St Leonards Observer, issue of July 7th 1934:

THE LATE MR HARRY WOODHURST - The death occurred on Saturday last of Mr Harry Woodhurst, at his residence, 459, The Ridge, St Leonards, at the age of 68 years. Mr Woodhurst was well known in Hastings, having been a carpenter by trade. The funeral took place at the Borough Cemetery on Wednesday, when the Rev. J W Hallam officiated. The chief mourners included the widow, son and brothers and sisters, and the floral tributes were of a very beautiful nature.

Deidamia died aged 85 in 1960 [Death Index: Battle 5h 27, 1960 (Sept)].
