Brief biography

Leonard Arthur George Woodhurst was born on February 3rd 1908 [Birth Index: W. Ham 4a 512, 1908 (March)] to parents Walter Alfred Woodhurst and his wife Florence Maud Gooderham.

He married Dorothy Margaret Craig (born April 7th 1906) in 1931 [Marriage Index: W. Ham 4a 1272, 1931 (Sept)].

One of his grand-daughters has kindly supplied the following further biographical details. Leonard was educated at the Sir George Monoux School in Walthamstow and joined the National Provincial Bank as a junior clerk. He was a good pianist and loved classical music and, before the War, had served as a Congregational Church organist. On the outbreak of war he joined the RAF under a scheme whereby bank staff could join as junior officers, and served almost all of his time in Cyprus. By the end of the war his former religious faith had dissipated. He was a Rotarian and undertook charity work throughout the rest of his life. He had a letter published in The Times and was a competitor in the Brain of Britain radio series. By the time of his retirement he had risen to Branch Manager in the bank.

In 1980 he prepared a quite detailed family tree showing much of the progeny of his grandfather George Daniel, subsequently cartographed in 1982 by his nephew Christopher John. Another descendant passed a copy of this printed tree to the site author.

He died of colon cancer in Whipps Cross Hospital in 1982 [Death Index: Redbridge 14 1341, 1982 (Dec)]. Dorothy Margaret died in 1984 [Death Index: Harlow 0584 9 2497, 1984].

Molly Patricia married Ronald Sydney Brown and produced two children Penelope Clare (born in 1959) and Caroline Heidi (born in 1961).

Marc was a graduate of Leeds University and a postgraduate of the Franz Liszt Hochschule in Weimar, Germany, becoming a freelance horn player in London and the South-East. He obtained a Masters Degree (MMus) from Trinity College of Music and played principal horn for British Youth Opera's 2002 and 2003 seasons at the South Bank. Whilst in Germany he recorded brass chamber music for MDR radio and ZDF television and as a soloist he was twice invited to perform Britten's Serenade.
