Brief biography

Margaret Mangler was born, according to various sources (including unattributed IGI patron submission records), in Jackson County, Iowa on January 25th 1884 (or, just possibly, 1883) to parents George Friedrich Christian Mengeler and his wife Margarethe Catharine Sophie Marie (nee) Grossman. These sources variously give her birthplace as Green Island or Preston in Jackson County. George was reputedly born on November 21st 1830 in Wendelborstel, Hannover in Germany (Prussia), and Margarethe on February 2nd 1842 in Germany. Margaret had seven siblings - Molly, Emma, Henry, William, Sophia, Dora and George.

In 1900 Margaret - known familiarly as "Maggie" - married Frank Umbaugh. He was reputedly born at Carrollton in Carroll County, Iowa on July 26th 1877 to parents Elias Lawrence Umbaugh and his wife Melissa (nee) Tuel. A wedding photograph of Frank and Maggie appears on Page 351 of Richard A. Huehn's book The Family of Jacob W. Umbaugh and Elias L. Umbaugh, published on March 2nd 1993. They produced the three children listed below.

It appears that they subsequently divorced. It is claimed that in 1916 Maggie remarried to a "William Woodhurst" who, almost certainly, was William J. (1) Woodhurst. It is not known whether any children were born to this marriage.

On October 29th 1919 Frank also remarried, to Margaret Pearl Ellsworth, at Jefferson in Greene County, Iowa. Margaret Pearl was born on December 20th 1894 at Scranton in Greene County.

A 1929 Directory for Clinton in Iowa contains an entry for "Woodhurst Margaret Mrs, r 220 2s av N" which may be a reference to Maggie. No mention is made in this directory of her husband, who may have been dead or separated from her. She has not yet been located in the US 1930 Census.

There exists one IGI record claiming that in 1930 Maggie married yet again to a Wilbur "Billy" Wells, but no corroborating evidence has been found for this.

Frank died on February 10th 1940.

Maggie died on July 20th 1952, possibly in Charlotte township in Clinton County. Her death was announced in The Davenport Democrat on July 22nd of that year. The same date of death is confirmed in the records of the USGenWeb Archives Cemetery Transcription Project. Both sources refer to her by her Woodhurst surname, casting some doubt on the claim that she had married into the Wells surname. According to Huehn's book, her husband "William Woodhurst" had already died. She was buried at the Springdale Cemetery at Clinton in Clinton County.

Margaret Pearl died on July 5th 1970.
