Brief biography

Mary L. Woodhurst was born in Indiana to parents Theodore (1) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Virginia (nee) Alexander. The American Social Security Death Index gives her date of birth as February 14th 1887.

The US 1900 Census finds her at age "12" living with her parents in Richmond, Wayne Co. in Indiana and attending school.

The US 1910 Census finds her at age "23" living with her widowed mother in Richmond and with no occupation. Her mother was also unoccupied but living on her "own income".

The US 1920 Census finds her at age "32", unmarried and living with her widowed mother in Richmond. She was employed as a bank clerk.

The US 1930 Census finds her at age "40", still unmarried and again living with her widowed mother at 125, South 10th Street in Richmond, very near to her married sister Carrie May. She had no occupation.

The US 1940 Census finds her at age "53" living alone at 125, South 10th Street and working as a stenographer for a trust company.

She remained at the same address, never married and died at the Reid Memorial Hospital on December 6th 1966. Her death certificate states that she had been occupied as a secretary for the Dickinson Trust. The cause of death was gangrene in the left leg (2 weeks); she had also been suffering from obstructive emphysema and arteriosclerotic heart disease. She was buried at the Earlham Cemetery on December 8th.

Local newspapers referred to her on numerous occasions during her adult life and made clear that she played a large role in her community, being involved in many strands of social life. Despite much research, her middle name remains unknown.
