Brief biography

Mercy (2) Woodhurst was born to parents Thomas (1) Woodhurst and his wife Mercy Swadling. She was christened at Pett on July 17th 1808 [Pett Parish Register].

She married at Rye on April 19th 1829 to Joseph Addy of Wittersham, Kent [Parish Register]. The marriage was witnessed by her younger unmarried sister Ann (2), together with Henry (1) Freeman and Abigail Freeman. Henry (1) Freeman is believed to have been the brother of John (1) Freeman whose son Dive married Mercy (2)'s other sister Mary (1). His wife Abigail (nee Swadling), whom he had married at Rye on February 15th 1814 [Parish Register], was probably Mercy Swadling's younger sister.

Joseph was born in Wittersham around 1799-1800.

Mercy (2) and Joseph produced at least the six children listed below. By 1841 their daughter Ann Addy was living in Udimore with her grandfather Thomas (1). In 1851 Ann Addy and her brother Trayton were living with Thomas (1) in Playden, whilst their sister Mary was living in Icklesham with her uncle Tom Woodhurst. It is not known what had become of Mercy (2) and Joseph at the times of these censuses, nor why some of their children were not living with them.

The 1861 Census finds them with four of their children living in the "Peening Quarter" of Wittersham. Joseph was occupied as an agricultural labourer. Also in the household was a grand-daughter Mary Jane Wenham aged "4" whose precise connection is not yet known.
