Brief biography

Morris Elmer Woodhurst was born to John Elmer Woodhurst and his wife Anna Elizabeth (nee Morris) on January 11th 1899, probably in the city of Richmond, Wayne Co. in Indiana.

The US 1900 Census finds him at age "1" living with his parents in Richmond and describes him as born in Indiana in January 1899.

He attended Richmond High School. A yearbook ("The Pierian") for that school compiled in 1918 shows his photograph alongside a caption stating that he had joined the Army. This military spell must have been short-lived because two years later, when he married, he was clearly a civilian.

The US 1920 Census finds him at age "20" living with his parents in Richmond and employed as a contractor's clerk.

Later that year, in early August, he became engaged to Elfreda (nee) Harlan, born on August 27th 1897 to parents Charles and Minnie Harlan. She too had graduated from Richmond High School. They married at Denver, Colorado on August 28th 1920 and appear at first to have taken up residence with his parents who had recently moved to there.

It appears that by 1930 they had separated. The US 1930 Census finds Morris, described as married, in the household of his parents at 1426, Humboldt Street, Denver and working as a bookkeeper for an auto store. Meanwhile Elfreda and their son Robert Harlan were living elsewhere in Denver at 461, Adams Street; she had no occupation.

Morris and Elfreda divorced in Denver on February 27th 1934.

In 1936 Morris remarried at Castle Rock, Douglas Co., Colorado to Hazel E. "Peggy" (nee Galbraith) Nash.

Hazel had been born in Utah in about 1890 and raised as a child in Colorado by her divorced mother Tina, a boarding house proprietor, with whom she is found aged "8" in the US 1900 Census. Colorado state records indicate that she first married in Denver to Oliver A. Nash on February 24th 1910 and divorced him there on October 3rd 1912. She has not been found with certainty in the US 1910, 1920 or 1930 Censuses.

The US 1940 Census finds Morris and Hazel living at 1518, Broadway in Denver. He was occupied as an accountant for a motor company and she as the proprietor of an antique shop. Meanwhile, Elfreda was back in Indiana, living in Richmond with her son Robert Harlan in the household of her parents Charles and Minnie at 320, South 15th Street. She was working in the office of a general store.

The American Social Security Death Index states that Hazel was born on November 7th 1890, was issued with SSN 522-62-6532 in Colorado in 1963 and died in December 1978. Her place of residence had been 80219 Denver in Colorado. She was buried at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Jefferson Co., Colorado.

The SSDI states that Morris died on January 18th 1995 and that his SSN was 522-01-0296. His place of residence had also been 80219 Denver in Colorado and he too was buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery.
