Brief biography

Percy Woodhurst was born in 1882 at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk to parents Alfred Thomas (1) Woodhurst and his wife Frances Jane Clarke [Birth Index: Bury St. Edmunds 4a 644, 1882 (March)].

The 1891 Census finds him at age "9" living with his parents at 21, Meat Market in St. James Parish, Bury St. Edmunds.

The 1901 Census finds him at age "19" in the household of a retired wine shipper James B. Hude at 26, Leyland Road in Lewisham, Greater London. The household included several servants of which Percy was one, although his occupation was given also as upholsterer's assistant.

The 1911 Census finds him at age "29" boarding with a Burally family at 29, Kingsley Road in Poulton with Seacombe, Merseyside in Cheshire and occupied as an insurance agent.

He married in 1911 to Lucy Florence (nee) Hooper [Marriage Index: Birkenhead 8a 1247, 1911 (Sept)].

A descendant reports that Percy and Lucy married on August 5th 1911 and that Lucy Florence was born on July 28th 1880 [Birth Index: Stoke D. 5b 349, 1880 (Sept)], one of nine children born to Francis Hooper and Jessie Lishmund who married on June 29th 1862 [Marriage Index: Stoke D. 5b 646, 1862 (June)].

They produced their first three children in the Liverpool area but by 1923 were in Colchester, Essex when their last child was born.

The National Register for England and Wales 1939 finds them living with three children at 1, Recreation Road in Colchester where Percy was occupied as manager for a wholesale confectioner. His daughter Ada was working as a hairdresser, whilst his daughter Ena was a stationer's ledger clerk. Also present was Lucy's unmarried sister Alice M. Hooper, a retired draper's assistant born on April 21st 1869.

Lucy Florence died aged "65" on August 24th 1945 [Death Index: Colchester 4a 696, 1945 (Sept)]. Probate was granted to Percy, a confectionery manager, on November 9th, her effects valued at £615. She had been residing at 1, Recreation Road.

Percy died aged "65" on February 26th 1947 [Death Index: Colchester 4a 764, 1947 (March)]. Probate was granted to two solicitors' clerks on May 7th, his effects valued at £1,314. He had likewise been residing at 1, Recreation Road.
