Brief biography

Robert Broadfoot Woodhurst was christened at Fairlight on March 12th 1831 of parents James (1) Woodhurst and Sarah (nee) Broadfoot [Parish Register]. This date is consistent with census data [UK Census 1841]. His second forename was chosen as his mother's maiden name.

He emigrated to South Carolina in the early 1840s with his widowed mother and his siblings.

The US 1850 Census finds him at age 20 in The District, Edgefield County in South Carolina, apparently lodging in the family home of a wealthy farmer W.F. Winn whose real estate was valued at $2800. He was working as a shoe and boot maker. The record confirms his birthplace as England.

Having never married, he died from yellow fever on 5 October 1854 in Charleston, SC to which he had travelled in search of work [Edgefield Advertiser, contemporary article]. An uncorroborated IGI ancestral file, however, claims he died on September 24th 1854. His burial place is unknown.
