Brief biography

Robert (1) Woodhurst may have been born to parents William (1) Woodhurst and his wife Elizabeth Clements. His baptism record has not yet been sought.

The 1861 Census finds him lodging at 4, Sidney Street in Mile End Old Town, very close to where Ambrose Woodhurst was then living - Ambrose being a proven child of William (1). This property accommodated several households seemingly unrelated to Robert (1), who had no family members listed with him. The record gives his status as married, his age as 40, his birthplace as Rochester and his occupation as dyer. His Woodhurst surname is crystal clear on the schedule.

The evidence for his being a child of William (1) is wholly circumstantial. Three of William (1)'s known children were born in Frindsbury - right next to Rochester - and three of his children worked as dyers at various times in their lives. If Robert (1) was approaching his 41st birthday in early 1861 then he would have been born around 1820, a date which can be comfortably accommodated among those of the other siblings.

Other than this 1861 Census record, nothing more is currently known of him. The GRO Indexes appear to have no entries for his marriage, the births of his children (if any), his death or his wife's death.
