Brief biography

Robert Wilbur Woodhurst was born in 1922 at Abbeville, SC to parents James Andrew Woodhurst and his wife Mary Etta G. King. The American Social Security Death Index gives his birthdate as September 13th 1922.

The US 1930 Census finds him at age "7" living with his parents and siblings in Abbeville.

He married Genevieve ("Geneva") Sain and produced at least three children. He died at Rock Hill, SC on October 28th 1991 aged 69 and was buried there at the Rogers Memorial Associated Reform Presbyterian Church. His published obituary [The Herald, Rock Hill, Page 9A, October 30/31 1991] reads as follows:

Obituary: ROCK HILL -- Mr. Robert Wilbur Woodhurst, 69, of 2752 Bonneybrook Circle, died Monday, Oct. 28, 1991, at Piedmont Medical Center. The memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Memorial ARP Church, with the Revs. Steve Reynolds and W.F. Mitchell officiating. Burial will be private.

Born in Abbeville, Mr. Woodhurst was retired from the Navy, having served in World War II and with the Sea Lift Command. He was a member of Rogers Memorial ARP Church in Rock Hill, Elks Lodge No. 1318, Rock Hill Moose Lodge, American Legion Post 34 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2889.

Surviving are his wife, Geneva [sic] Sain Woodhurst; his son, Andrew Sain Woodhurst of Germany; two daughters, Michele Woodhurst of Atlanta and Diane Woodhurst of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Margene McDougal of Atlanta and Kay Lacefield of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and one grandchild.

Andrew Sain married Melinda Sue Vaughn, born in 1960 to parents Wylie Gene Vaughn (born 1938) and his wife Acelia Sue (nee Young) (born 1940). They produced a son Andrew Robert Woodhurst. In 2002 Melinda Sue was serving as Lt. Col. in command of a Corps Support Battalion at Fort Irwin [reported in The Tiefort Telegraph on December 20th 2002.]
