Brief biography

Rosina Woodhurst was born in 1910 to parents William (8) Woodhurst and his wife Mary Ann (nee Downey), being their last child. Her birth certificate [Birth Index: Southwark 1d 6, 1910 (June)] states that she was born on March 19th 1910 at her parent's address 80, Gravel Lane in Southwark. Her father was occupied as a cabinet maker journeyman and her mother was the informant.

Most of the information on this page was kindly provided for this site by Rosina's daughters.

Rosina's first partner was Frederick James Harris. There is no GRO reference to their marrying. They produced four children, all listed in the GRO birth index under both Harris and Woodhurst. Birgitta was born in 1933 and died aged about 9 months in 1934 [Death Index: Wandsworth 1d 523, 1934 (June), whilst Rosina was born in 1936 and died almost immediately [Death Index: Wandsworth 1d 618, 1936 (Dec)]. The third child Derek was born on March 27th 1938 and died on June 13th 1976, whilst Kathleen Brenda was born on March 15th 1941. Birgitta was born in Battersea and the other three all in Wandsworth. Birgitta's name was spelled that way in both her birth and her death references in the GRO, but may have been intended as Brigitta.

Frederick James owned several premises in Garratt Lane, Wandsworth, one being a general store where Rosina worked as a housekeeper and general assistant. Frederick James died on August 15th 1943. The store was bombed in 1944, whereupon Rosina moved to the vicinity of Wandsworth's York Road. She later moved to Kingsgate Road in Hampstead. She took care of her mother Mary Ann until the latter's death in Hampstead in 1945.

She married on March 26th 1949 to James William Hallett at Hampstead Register Office. The witnesses were her husband's brother Benjamin Charles Hallett and a W.M. Robinson whose connection is unknown. She was then residing at 73, Kingsgate Road in Hampstead and was working as a vegetable trimmer for a food product manufacturer. James was occupied as a cellulose sprayer at a coach painting firm. This marriage produced one child Winifred Rosina, born in Hampstead on January 31st 1953. Rosina moved to Frensham Drive in Putney Vale, London SW15, and in 1959 moved again, to Castlecombe Drive near Putney Heath in London SW19. By now she had lost all contact with her siblings.

She suffered a stroke in April 1982 and died from a chest infection on February 8th 1987 at St. John's Hospital in Battersea. She was buried at Putney Vale Cemetery. James William died aged 82 on April 3rd 1993 and was buried at the same cemetery.
