Brief biography

Teresa Woodhurst was born in 1851 to parents Richard William (1) Woodhurst (RWW) and his first wife Susannah Miller. Her birth certificate [Birth Index: Shoreditch II 482, 1851 (June)] shows that she was born at her parents' residence 16, Red Lion Street, Kingsland Road, Shoreditch on April 28th 1851. RWW's occupation is given as dyer. Her birth was not registered until six weeks later, on June 6th. She was christened on May 25th at the Church of St. John the Baptist, Shoreditch [IGI: Batch C040371].

She died aged 6 weeks on June 9th 1851. Her death certificate [Death Index: Shoreditch II 318, 1851 (June)] states that she died at 16, Red Lion Street and describes her as the daughter of Richard William Woodhurst, a dyer. The informant, who signed with only a 'X' mark, was named as Elizabeth Woodhurst - assumed to be RWW's mother - living (or perhaps just visiting) at 17, Scott Street in Bethnal Green Parish. She registered the death on June 12th. The cause was cited as congenital debility, against which is written the number 42 - presumably the number of days during which the condition had persisted. Teresa had indeed lived for just 42 or 43 days.

Three months previously, the 1851 Census had recorded just two Woodhursts at 17, Scott Street, namely RWW's siblings Ellen (1) and Ambrose. It appears that their mother Elizabeth subsequently joined them there when Teresa was nearing her death.
