Notes

The National Archives in America hold various documents pertaining to the military service and subsequent pension claims of William (4) Woodhurst. Transcriptions of the service-related (muster roll) documents are given below. Where text appears in red font, this signifies that the original writing is unclear and that the transcription is uncertain.

Most of these muster roll records - which vary in type - are headed by the lines:

[Sutlers were civilian peddlers who attached themselves to regiments by semi-official appointment, and who
supplied troops with provisions not otherwise available to them. They were a constant source of disputes
but were regarded, on both the Union and Confederate sides, as a necessary evil. The amount by which a
soldier could be indebted to his sutler was limited by the military, which is why the amounts due are noted
 in the muster roll records.]
