Brief biography

Walter Albert Woodhurst was born in 1903 to parents Walter Arthur Frederick Woodhurst and his first wife Laura (nee) Novelle. His birth certificate [Birth Index: W. Ham 4a 405, 1903 (March)] states that he was born at his parents' address 2, Granville Terrace, Huxley Road in Leyton on January 6th 1903. His father was occupied as a boot-heel attacher and his mother was the informant.

In 1923 he married Elsie M. Gilham [Marriage Index: W. Ham 4a 150, 1923 (Dec)]; her middle name was probably May.

He died aged 27 in 1930 [Death Index: W. Ham 4a 178, 1930 (Sept)].

In 1942 Elsie remarried to James W. Fedden [Marriage Index: Essex S.W. 4a 719, 1942 (Dec)]. She and James may both have died in Swindon.

Leonard J.E. Woodhurst married in 1952 to Jean Audrey Adams [Marriage Index: Essex S.W. 5a 401, 1952 (March)]. Their first child was Stephen Leonard [Birth Index: W. Ham 5a 810, 1953 (June)]. In 1958 they emigrated to New York on the ship "United States", departing from Southampton on February 8th. The ship's manifest describes Leonard as an electrician born on June 3rd 1927 and formerly residing at 132, Fillebrook Road in Leytonstone. Accompanying him were Jean and Stephen. Subsequently they produced another son Darryl John. Jean died in 2007 and the following obituary was published on February 14th in The Sun News:

MYRTLE BEACH | Jean Audrey Woodhurst, 75, of Lake Park, died Monday, February 12, 2007 at her home.
Born July 31, 1931 in London, England, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Irene Appleyard Adams.
Mrs. Woodhurst was a member of the Humane Society. She was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother. 
Having survived World War II, all through the London bombings, Jean and her husband, Len, came to the 
United States in 1958 to start a new life and raise a family.
Surviving are her husband, Leonard Woodhurst; sons, Darryl John Woodhurst and Stephen Leonard Woodhurst; 
five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sisters, Eileen Gallifant and Stella Sedgley.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2007 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.
