Brief biography

William Horace Woodhurst was born to parents William (1) Woodhurst and his wife Elizabeth Clements. He was christened on July 13th 1823 at St. Paulinus Church in Crayford, Kent [British Vital Records: FHL Film 1469337].

The 1841 Census finds him at age "15" living with his parents in West Street, West Ham in Essex, where he was occupied as a labourer.

It is probable that he enlisted with the 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot and served in India, dying there in 1845. An extract made on July 15th 1845 by Assistant Chaplain Frederick Fisher B.A. from the "Death Register of the Church at Chinsurah" (in West Bengal) records the burial there on May 20th 1845 of a private "William Woodhurst" aged 21. This is the age that William Horace would have been on that date, that is, a little under 22.
